What Scott was up to prior to Pain Teens: Apparently there exists a cassette by "Naked Amerika, which was a band Torry Mercer and Scott and I we're in back in the late '80s. Scott produced it and it contains a song by Torry called Born in Blood. The way the Pain Teens got their name was that Torry disliked the name Naked Amerika and wanted to change it to 'Pain Teens,' which sounds like 'paintings' and was meant to be a joke about that group's 'art band' sound."
The evolution of the onstage whipping ritual: John describes a video in his possession of the third Pain Teens live show at the Axiom in Houston: "In their previous show, Bliss had asked for a volunteer from the audience to sit on the stage during New Woman and she stood over him, threatening him with a whip. I thought this was disappointing dramatically and volunteered to be actually whipped the next show. Bliss had never whipped anybody before and nearly got me in the eye. At the after party she was surprised at the welts she had raised on my back and apologetically offered me icepacks and ointments.I was Bliss' onstage victim a few more times but always wore a blindfold after that." [This show apparently took place February 6, 1998.]
NOTE FROM THE MOONUNIT:
I've seen the video in question and it's a good look at the early Pain Teens, although the band isn't terribly impressed by it (naturally).
